Quite simply, this is one of the best books of the decade!

Already, Syjuco has been compared to writers like Salman Rushdie & David Mitchell and it is easy to see why; he challenges our concept of what a novel can be. As another review has stated, this is a difficult book to review. Using disparate sources (jokes, traditional linear narratives, interviews, diary entries and book excerpts), Syjuco fashions a tale of a young writer's search to find the missing manuscript of his mentor and friend, Crispin Salvador, and to uncover the truth behind the death of the Philippines' greatest writer. Along the way, we learn much about our protagonist (Miguel Syjuco), his mentor (Salvador) and the tumultuous history of the Philippines.

This is not a quick (or easy) read, but the rewards are well worth the investment. Like all great books, Ilustrado asks as many questions as it answers, and it leaves you wanting/needing to reread it immediately. Luckily, thanks to Syjuco's beautiful prose, that is sheer pleasure!

Dreadful because it is impossible to follow. My book club selected this book based on the fact that it won the Man-Asia Award. How it was bestowed this award is beyond my and other club members' comprehension.
A bit onerous, the jumps from
one narrative to another end up being exhaustive. Story telling seems contrived or tedious at time. This is a great talent that loves literal pyrotechnics but ultimately fails to engage the reader in a meaningful and sustained manner
Syjuco's use of vocabulary is really nice and the premise of the book showed great potential, but I didn't really enjoy the book. I think it is primarily because I didn't like any of the characters in the story. I also found some odd comments that made me wonder how often the writer has visited the Philippines. For example there is one scene where a character is looking at a security guard who stares back at him in a tough manner, but a security guard in the Philippines would never do that. There was another scene with something uncharacteristic of Filipinos, but I can't remember anymore.
I have no doubt why it got Man Asia prize. The only point where it falls little short of expectations is the way in which story ends. But form is awesome, especially those jokes!!
Takes a while before you get the hang of the different story lines. Eventually it will get easy and you start to enjoy it. Love the ending.
The portrayal of philippine culture by integrating it into a grand sweep of history has a fairly prestigious past-- the few examples of the genre have been well received and generally liked. they were like those classmates you had back in high school who you remember having a laugh or two with and throwing a couple back some random weekend at that strip mall you used to live 15 minutes away from. a few good memories and impressions, but you hardly even remember what he was like after all these years. and then a book like ilustrado comes along with a bit of bragadoccio and unusual ideas about philippine culture, history , and its political upheavals to go along with the more usual ones and you feel all of a sudden that you've found a new best friend.

forgive the silliness of what i've said; all i am trying to convey is that syjuco's book, while very much a first novel in its ever so often tentative flow, is at the same time a sterling example of a lyrical, biting, surreal, and most importantly, ambitious and daring piece of work. 'ambitious' and 'daring' are much bandied about, but the shoe fits. amidst page after page of despairing humanity, that the author can prescribe such a convincing and deceptively simple redemption as the expat artist coming back home goes beyond weepy sentimentalism and could in fact serve as a very real battle cry for a talented diaspora.

moving beyond the trauma inflicted by the colonial past and the ruined martial law generation, syjuco attempts to define the new setting of philippine culture (high or low) as it flowers--that is, anywhere in the world there's a job to do or paycheck to collect--and for the most part succeeds. portrait of an artist as a filipino abroad would perhaps be button-holing it, but it's a good place to start with this sprawling, sometimes fuzzy, but always provocative novel. i enjoyed it thoroughly and look forward to his next book.
Syjuco writes what seems to be a semi-autobiographical book about the discovery of his own and his country's soul. The book is profound, funny, and supremely honest. His writing is both precise and poetic. He deserves all the prizes he's won.
