Vigilantius and His Times William Stephen Gilly 9781141009985 Books

I recommend this book to everyone interested in the rise and development of early Christianity. The biographical sketches of Jerome and other ascetic notables of the time are very well done. This is a history that is sympathetic to Vigilantius, but I do not offer that as a negative criticism. Balanced history will sometimes be sympathetic when the historical evidence calls for it. Gilly's description of the excesses of asceticism, and the pressures that movement brought upon the times, are very well depicted, and I came away with what I believe is a clearer understanding of the times in general because of it. Gilly clearly feels that Vigilantius was unjustly condemned by those in powerful Christian positions, and the evidence that is available supports him in that opinion. It is a pity that Christian leaders from that time, and forward, often destroyed the writings of men who opposed their "orthodox" positions, such as Vigilantius. If we had more of his writings instead of depending on what his critics wrote about him, he may have come across as even more reasonable and honest as he is made to appear in this book.
