A man lies unresponsive in the front seat of a crashed car.

Connie Carson-Romano rushes to help, acting on instinct as she and an emergency medical technician attempt to save his life.

The man doesn't live but the experience changes Carson-Romano forever, prompting her to become an EMT. Now she gives readers an up close look at her adventures in emergency medicine in her memoir, The Other Side of the Gurney.

After twenty years working as an EMT and paramedic, Carson-Romano becomes a registered nurse specializing in critical care. She shares what it's like to be an "accidental hero" and offers these stories as a tribute to those invited into people's homes and lives during the most frightening times imaginable. Carson-Romano crafts her stories with compassion and humor while covering a wide range of experiences, including childbirths in dramatic situations, traumatic accidents, and patients nearing the ends of their lives.

The sad, funny, and feel good times are all here—and will make readers appreciate the emergency medical responders who risk their own lives to save ours.

The Other Side of the Gurney Stories and Reflections of a 911 Paramedic eBook Connie CarsonRomano Reviews

This book is a real-life peak into the life of an extraordinary nurse and her work in the ER, hospital ICU, and emergency rescue. This nurse is a shining example of professionalism, knowledge, kindness, and love for her patients and their loved ones. It felt like this was written about me and my years of experience as a nurse while working in many different environments. I ,too, love people and have had many experiences that echo the ones in this book. Brilliant writing and, yes, my favorite story was the mermaid. 😂 I plan to re-read this book more than once. Thank you, Connie !
I found this book to have many instances where I found myself cheering for the various authors as well as grieving with them many times throughout the text. The reading of this boo was the result of an end of the year sophomore English project and though sometimes find myself asking "Why?" to the my many English teachers and the boos they choose, I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the book. The unedited feel of it all gives a tangible feeling and does not leave you questioning the tactics the paramedics and emergency service employees used and the terms used to describe various things. It truly gives a real life perspective on the people who work n the pre-hospital setting, giving insight on the crazy environments they find themselves in and the sometimes crazier people they deal with on a day-to-day bass. All in all it is a great quick read that will really give the reader insight on the people who work "The Other Side of the Gurney".
Good read, lots of introspective bits that makes one really appreciate our First Responders above and beyond the jobs they do. Its more than a job, and can often cost them their lives. I once was pretty sure most Americans aren't so ignorant and hateful then I got old. Now? God bless these people for putting up with ingrates and crazies. We're all sick at one time or another and it would be great if, in their infinite wisdom our burgeoning bureaucracy would demand that every kid in junior high and again in high school take lessons in "when NOT to go to ER and when NOT to call 911!" But then, I am being sarcastic ... wisdom and bureaucracy just can't be in the same sentence! Thank the stars and moon for EMTs everywhere!
A very real view of being an emergency responder paramedic and later a hospital nurse. The writer shares the medical details as well as the unvarnished emotions in dealing with trauma, emotions that often must be fought down to give appropriate care.

Her experience as the patient after a road rage incident is enlightening but not fully fleshed out. Perhaps even several years later it still holds too much pain. I also wish she had interpreted her symptoms afterward as what they obviously we're, PTSD.

I recognize them from experience. After surviving a nearly fatal almost head on collision caused by drunk drivers, the sight of oncoming headlights panicked me for years and was so intense that being a passenger at night was difficult and driving at any time was impossible for years. I suspect this is far from uncommon after trauma.

Still, a series of interesting vignettes give an insiders view to emergency medicine. Well worth a read.
Great book!
I have wanted to be a paramedic for a long time but wanted to be sure that its for me, this book told me all I needed to know, now I can say for sure that this is the best job for me!
It was like a ridealong! Not a boring page in this book.well written.Excitement and surprise in ever call.Loved it! well worth reading.
