Bought and tried to read the entire 3-volume series--killed brain cells on this volume--pace isn't just slow--it's GLACIAL. I painfully waded up to page 170, but couldn't punish myself any more and went on to the last volume--which is just as bad. In all fairness, the first volume (Live Free or Die) was a great read, enjoyable and entertaining, with original thoughts and excellent plot line.John Ringo generally writes very well and I highly recommend him. This book is the exception that proves the rule, and a complete waste of time--unless you LIKE supposition and second-rate philosophy seasoned with inaction and insecurity. It seems like Ringo lost his way in the forest and couldn't find his way back home, on this one.
But, like I said--the exception to the rule--try his other works, they're great.

Citadel John Ringo 9781439134009 Books Reviews
If you loved the first book, you may like this one. Half of the book you're wondering what's going on, bored out of your mind and double checking that you actually bought the sequel (Book 2) of the series as it really has no connection to book one until halfway through. Ringo is honestly a horrible writer but a decent story teller. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book. Though he jumps around and jumps into the future far too often. He introduces two new, boring, minor characters that seem to have no point in being in this book other than to describe what is going on at the battle station Troy. The main character of the first book and series is only mentioned in passing until halfway through. The entire first half is so boring and drags and drags. I was truly mystified as to what was going on. There was no continuation from the first book really and then once I forced myself through the book I find that Ringo did what apparently he's known for... quitting on his series and moving on. Never buying another book from him again. So saddened I'll never get to read a book like the first one again. Though I don't read books much anymore, I listen to the audiobooks.
I concur with the reviewers who found the inclusion of new bit players asubstantial waste of time since they were really not that important to the overall story arc, at least the one that I was interested in. I am referring to the Butch/Comet storyline which seemed to be a total waste of time and added little to what I wanted the author to concentrate on.
Some people prefer that additional character development, I thought it wasted many pages and ultimately didn't add to the overall plot or air of the book. I found myself skipping entire sections related to them and not feeling like I missed anything vital to the story.
In any event, despite that minor complaint, it still is an interesting story line and I will continue it to the end.
I do wish that the author and publisher would consider offering kindle versions but it is a free country and nothing requires them to do so.
If you like alien characters that are interesting, funny, conniving, and different this book is for you. Many of the characters from book 1 Live Free or Die do not reappear in this book, excepting of course the Maple Syrup King Tyler. Another major new character , Dana "Comet" Parker begin their story arc in this book. I have lost track of how many times I have read this series since it first came out, a couple of dozen easily. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
John Ringo is my favorite author. He bumped David Weber to #3 just even with Larry Niven.
Large engineering projects are my stock in trade. Never anything the size of Troy, but big enough to put a big hole in a million dollars. Most of them in the 80's and 90's when a million was real money.
I loved the descriptions and characterizations.
The best part ofvthe book was the epilogue. Reminded me of my own Mom.
John Ringo ups the ante in this sequel to Troy Rising. I've always enjoyed Mr. Ringos novel BUT this one was probably better than the polseen war series. One man, the maple syrup king basically saves earth and our whole solar system by building his own private Battle Station into the hull of a 9kilometer iron rock. This huge platform protects earths gate from the evil alien empires looking to enslave the human population. Of course not all the nations of earth are grateful, political views and hierarchy's need to save face. Screw them, Live free baby, human kind is not slave to an alien oppression. Awesome read, turn pages fast and keep the midnight oil burning, you won't want to put this down. If you like John Ringos past books, this series is a must read!
This is classic John Ringo. The good guy is the good guy. The bad guy is the bad guy. None of this "sure he does a bunch of bad things, but he's a troubled good guy" I hate that. With John Ringo you get a over the top good guy. I think he does a great job. Some times he does go a little to far into the "technical science" parts, but overall I love his writing. Currently reading the Troy rising and the Black Tide Rising series from John Ringo. I don't recommend doing both series at the same time. Read one take a break then read the other. Overall great series and great author.
Writing from a life well lived with family and friends well loved, John Ringo's once again weaves a wonderful tale. Skeins of space opera, vibrant characters and desperate situations woven together turn a tale into a tapestry. When all the signs read that "here there be dragons", look past and you will find Ringo building worlds for us to adventure in. I can't wait how for the next one.
Airborne all the way! (SRF)
