This is a simple, western romance with just a dash of danger to make things interesting. It is a story that's been done before - the new school teacher comes to a remote western town, fresh from the east, and after several trials, is able to show the towns people a more enlightened way, while capturing the heart of a lone wolf cowboy. There are few surprises, and you pretty much know how it will end up...it is a romance after all.

Having said that, I LOVED this book. The characters were engaging, the romantic tension was handled extremely well, and you really wanted to see how it all turned out, even though you knew there'd be a happy ending. Sure, it may be a little dated, but it has a very satisfying ending and you enjoy the journey along the way.

I keep coming back to this book like an old friend, and have read it four or five times. It is a lovely way to spend a cozy evening.

This is one of my all time favorite books... definitely a keeper.... have it in paperback somewhere in my house... but haven't read it in years... Was so happy when I saw the Mackenzie books available for my kindle... you can't go wrong with a Linda Howard book.... so well written... characters you will truly care about... and each subsequent book seems to include a little update about the other characters... you get another glimpse of their lives.... and still, you will hunger for more...
I really can't give this book anything better than an average score due to the fact that it's written in the "old style," where everything is told instead of shown. The plot was quaint, and engaging enough for me to finish (I didn't rush home to get to this book, though), but nothing that ever completely held my interest.

I don't know what to think of Linda Howard. Her book CRY NO MORE was one of the most powerful romances I've ever read. Every book I've tried since then has been pretty meh. Howard obviously has talent, so I don't know what's going on with her being hit or miss (I've read this from other reviewers, too, about her books). Maybe her publishers rush her. But whatever the reason, she writes either love 'em or hate 'em books for me, and I think I'm done with the guesswork.
I enjoyed this book even though it is not my go-to genre. Usually I love reading a book from a dual/multiple pov but did not like the way this one jumped hastily from one person's pov to the next. This took a bit getting used to.

You cannot help but fall in love with Wolf someone who has being unfairly treated because of his "breed". But that is not all this book is about. I loved the way the relationship develops between Wolf and Mary and how they were out to protect each other from harm (be it hurtful remarks or physical hurt). Throw in the fact that Mary is an awesome, no nonsense taking teacher who fights to make people see the wrong in their ways, and you have a good story there.

Although I enjoyed the suspense of the storyline, it was quite obvious (in my opinion) who the culprit is. The (vital) role Joe played in the story adds to the allure of this book.
4.5 Stars

What a good book! Mckenzie’s Mountain is a romantic suspense containing some strong prejudices that are a reminder of how racist and inconsiderate people can be.

It broke my heart how the small town’s people of Ruth judged Wolf Mckenzie and his son Jo because of their heritage and the color of their skin. I admired Mary so much for her bravery and willingness to not only stand up for the Mackenzies, but to show without any hesitation whatsoever that she cared for them both.

Wolf and Mary were both great characters. Even when Wolf was being all grumpy and growly, you knew the man was crazy about Mary. To be such a little thing, she sure had a fiery temper and I loved how fast she’s make her feelings known when someone or something was being wronged. Jo was another great character and I’m looking forward to reading his book next.
Such a surprise and wonderful book. Wolf and Mary as the main characters, Joe and others rounding out a stellar secondary cast.

Both Wolf and Mary were well-developed and the author kept them consistent throughout the story. Mary’s humble demeanor never changed even as she evolved as a woman. She was simple, but strong and fearless. Wolf was a cautious man, consistently stoic and steadfast.

The book handled two very difficult subjects racial prejudice and violence against women. Both were woven into the fabric of the story and with the skillful development of the plot and the characters, the book was enjoyable and not tacky. The budding relationship and beautiful romance was sensual and not erotic, which added to this delightful story. The book’s ending was a soft landing and left you feeling hopeful and good.

This is the second book I’ve read by Ms. Howard, but it won’t be the last. I like her character development and the presentation of her storylines.

Excellent.
Trigger warnings for rape

This stand-alone is easy to follow. The subject matter of rape and prejudice is depressing. No editing errors, gratuitous violence or drag-you-down drama.

The storyline is compelling with the shy, spinster teacher shaking the town up and not allowing abusive behavior.

Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking and memorable dialogue.

Obsessions were funny things; unhealthy ones could ruin lives, but some obsessions lifted people to higher planes of life, made them shine with a brighter light, burn with a hotter fire, and if those obsessions weren’t fed, then the person withered, a life blighted by starvation of the soul.

“I read somewhere that flying is like throwing your soul into the heavens and racing to catch it as it falls.”

No desire to re-read this story. I am interested in other works by this author.
