Hunter Trail Scarlett Bernard Melissa F Olson Books

A good series, and one that's starting to develop in unexpected ways. I almost gave up in the middle of this novel when people just kept expecting the injured Scarlett to keep taking care of their messes. Since her teens Scarlett has been cleaning up after supernaturals in Los Angeles and now they seem to expect her to solve bigger problems as well. In this book she is nursing a badly damaged knee while trying to track down a wolf who is killing women. Some of the wolves also begin hounding and threatening her because there are rumors of a cure for their condition and they think she has it.

I became increasingly irate as people who Scarlett was working hard to protect treat her poorly. When the handsome detective who has been recruited to assist the supernaturals unloads on Scarlett and leaves her at a crime scene I had had enough. I actually had to read ahead to find out just how much of a doormat this woman was going to allow herself to be. I don't wish to put out spoilers but suffice it to say this allowed me to finish the book. One reason I read fantasy novels is because I enjoy strong smart female characters.

Let's hear it for the doctor who reminds Scarlett of her value.

Hunter Trail Scarlett Bernard Melissa F Olson Books Reviews

**spoiler alert**

This is book 3 in the “Scarlett Bernard” series, and unfortunately I didn’t think it was as great as book 2, “Trail of Dead.” First off I have to say that I love Scarlett. No matter what she goes thru or what’s thrown her way, she always stays strong staying true to herself.

The story picks up one week after Scarlett’s confrontation with her former mentor, Olivia, which left her with a twisted knee and torn ligament. I felt really bad for Scarlett. She’s in so much physical pain and needs to be resting, but it was like no one cared or that they forgot she’s a null, a person who doesn’t heal quickly like that of a werewolf or vampire. There were times I was expecting Scarlett to break down, because if anyone has the right to have a meltdown it’s Scarlett. Olivia betrayed her, she came close to death several times, and even though she needs to rest, she’s still expected to do her job as a “cleaner.” I have to say I did not care for Jesse at all this round. I thought he was an arrogant judgmental *ss. Jesse tells Scarlett he loves her. Really? Instead of helping Scarlett with a job, he leaves her to do the job all on her own. Yeah, that’s love for you. Cue eye-roll. Even though he’s come to terms with the fact that other worldly beings are living amongst humans, he still sees everything in black and white. If that’s not bad enough, Jesse is forever judging Scarlett about the work she does. Talk about a hypocrite. When he learned that Dash could make it possible for him to be transferred to Homicide Special, a dream of Jesse’s, if he helped them in return, Jesse accepted. He made the decision alone. No one forced him. Yeah, what a saint. On top of which he’s taking out all his anger on everyone else, in particular Scarlett, instead of directing it towards the one he’s really angry at - himself.

As mentioned earlier, it’s out of left field when Jesse tells Scarlett he “loves” her. They may really like each other and shared a couple of kisses, but honestly I felt no chemistry or sizzle between the two. So what does Scarlett tell him? Yep, you guessed it. She “loves” him too. Really? I’d like to know why? And hello?? She just slept with Eli. Speaking of Eli, it’s too bad he only makes a couple of appearances this round especially since he’s loved Scarlett since day one. You can tell how much Eli loves and cares for her. In fact, Eli takes better care of Scarlett than Jesse who’s supposedly so in love with her.

The two main head honchos are Will (werewolf) and Dash (vampire) and they’ve made their appearances sporadically throughout the series. I find it surprising that the author doesn’t utilize them more as they’re both crucial to the story. They have such a hold on Scarlett. When summoned, she drops whatever she’s doing and goes to them. Hell, whenever she’s in Dash’s presence she’s shaking in her boots. She basically works for them. I say giving them a bigger role would most definitely add more appeal and drama to the series.

I found “Hunter’s Trail” to move at a slow pace. I thought it was bogged down with a lot of mumbo jumbo about werewolves, vampires, and witches, etc. C’est la vie.

So far I have no plans to stop reading the series. I just hope the next one is a better read.
Here in book 3, Scarlett is moving on from the events of book 2 and starting to recognize her own value. Knowing one's worth is the first step to knowing the worth of others. I had hoped she would be a little better at negotiating for herself with Dashiell etal, but I am glad she managed to get some concessions! I totally agree with others who mentioned being upset about how everyone in her world seems to think Scarlett should still be the community work-horse even though she is injured. One thing I find fascinating about this series is how folks who have admirable qualities also have unlikable qualities, which may or may not be tolerable, but/and I have an ongoing 'complaint' that some of the characters fail to evolve past their introduction or actually DE-evolve in some way.

Spoilers

My opinions of Will, Dashiell, & Jesse, for example, continue to slide downward with each book, because, while we may learn more about them and the display of good/bad traits makes them more 'human', they do not really improve/grow/evolve beyond them. I also found myself disappointed in the revelation of Will as a user, the unyielding negativity of Dr. Noring (although she DOES champion Scarlett), and both Kristen's and Molly's failure to woman-up to the challenges facing their community. Eli, on the other hand, showed he is a hero worth loving/knowing, who can be counted on, and who demonstrates his love, loyalty, and integrity with actions.

Rant about Jesse... feel feel to skip...By book 2, I was becoming more than annoyed at Jesse's childish grasp of good/bad behavior, but in this book, he made the final jump to bobble-head douche. A hero is someone who has the strength to do what needs to be done, without being a whiney candy-ass titty baby who drones on and on about how he's the only one with a conscience while he goes right on compromising his 'values' and blaming others for it. (e.g. Scarlett and Eli) Jesse's principles serve only to put Scarlett's life in danger and make her feel like crap. His overly simplistic view of life is more suited to a 12-yr-old boy scout who is afraid of getting caught breaking rules, but doesn't have the integrity NOT to break them, and not to compromise his principles if the compromise can mean he benefits. Jesse is the male version of an arrogant, judgmental, condescending, as well as controlling, little twit. He may be likeable in some ways and attractive, but he can not be relied upon and cannot be trusted. His treatment of his brother, as well as Scarlett made me want to slap him upside the head with a cast iron skillet. He thinks of himself as a man of integrity but is blind to how he ruthlessly controls/manipulates others to give himself a free pass. Argh.. He is not 'man' enough for Scarlett, or really anyone else. He needs to man the heck up.
