Cydni Hazard, Empathic Detective is a novel geared toward the middle-grade age group, roughly ages 9-12. It touches on topics of being different, something I am sure any preteen could relate to and embrace and understand.

The story was well written and the characteristics were realistic. As a parent, I could easily picture Cydni as someone that my 9 year old could relate to and understand.

While using the realm of the supernatural, the author touches on topics of being different and growing up, though through veiled references. We watch the character use her abilities to help a new friend, a boy that she does not know how she feels about. I was instantly transported to my own 12th year, remembering the awkwardness of meeting new people and being different, although my being different was nothing like what Cydni has. I really do not know what else to say, except that I got this kind of warm and fuzzy feeling that one would hope to find in a story geared to this age group.

I overall felt the story was well written and enjoyable. I cannot wait until my daughter gets a little older to share this story with her!

Twelve-year-old Cydni Hazard has had a difficult life. Her mother died when she was very little, and ever since she's been raised by her techie father. The problem is that Cydni is empathic; she picks up strongly on the feelings of others. Lucky for her though, her father's sister also has this talent and helps guide Cydni through discovering how to live life as an empath. Over the summer, Cydni goes to stay with Aunt Ettie while her dad goes to a technology show. While there, Cydni is intrigued by the mystery surrounding this peaceful looking pond behind Ettie's house. Shortly after arriving, Cydni makes friends with Nick, the local grocer's grandson. Cydni seems strangely drawn to Nick, making frequent excuses to find a way to visit him. Nick shares in this friendship, inviting Cydni here or there. During a trip to the local bookstore together, Nick and Cydni realize they share a love of detective work. Together, with the help of stray cats that serve as clues to Cydni, they spend their time trying to solve the mystery of the haunted pond. What happened at this mysterious pond? What's going to happen between Cydni and Nick? Will they solve the mystery? An adorable story about family and friendship, with charming characters, Cydni Hazard is an ideal pick for young readers. Small town life is magnified throughout this wonderful novel, making the reader wish to live in Marble Springs.
A paranormal detective story. Written for middle grade students.

This is a wonderful story. The main character is Cyndi Hazard. She is only 12 years old. She has an empathic gift. (or curse). An empath is someone who can feel the emotions of others. As with most paranormal beings, Cyndi does have an animal guide, her's is a cat. Cats help her along the way while utilizing her 'gift'.

Cyndi is a perfect main character. Outside of her empathic abilities, she is a normal 12 year old kid. She is likable and fun. She has the benefit of spending the summer months with an aunt who have a similar gift.

This is a fabulous book for young readers. There is, of course, a male character to appeal to male readers. Nick is a friend who shares Cyndi's love of adventure and mysteries.

I give this book 5 stars and recommend it for all middle grade students looking for a fun and interesting summer read.
